Worth It
A genuinely useful free winter attraction: easy to combine with Rheged cinema, food or an Ullswater/Penrith day, and a good option when the weather closes in.
Cosmic Cumbria runs at Rheged from 23 October 2026 to 8 February 2027 and is free to visit. Created by Eden Valley and Penrith Astronomy Group, the interactive exhibition uses astrophotography to take visitors from Earth through the Solar System and Milky Way to more distant galaxies.
Photography comes from Penrith & District Camera Club, Cockermouth Astronomical Society, Eddington Astronomical Society in Kendal and Furness & South Lakeland Astronomical Society. Bring a charged mobile if you want to interact with Zak, the exhibition's digital alien guide.
Rheged is a strong wet-weather option with cinema, café, deli and shops on the same site. The main visitor car park has 250 spaces and is free for customers for up to five hours; longer stays must be registered with Rheged staff, up to a 12-hour maximum.
Rheged's published department hours vary and it closes on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so check the gallery opening time for the exact day of your visit.
Accessibility
Rheged describes the building as wheelchair accessible with lifts, accessible toilets and a Changing Places facility in the filling station. Check individual needs with Rheged.
Weather plan
Indoor exhibition. Travel conditions can still affect the journey to Rheged in severe weather.
