Cockermouth is a handsome Georgian market town at the meeting of two rivers, known for Wordsworth, independent shops and easy access to the western Lake District.
The historic centre has broad streets, colourful shopfronts and a strong food and drink scene. Wordsworth House and Garden connects the town to the poet’s childhood, while the rivers Cocker and Derwent add attractive walks close to the centre.
Cockermouth is one of the best bases for Buttermere, Loweswater, Crummock Water and the Solway coast. It offers more everyday services than the smaller western villages while retaining a distinctive local identity.
