The historic street grid and harbour show the prosperity of a port that once traded across the Atlantic. Attractions such as The Beacon and The Rum Story explore local life, science and maritime commerce, including the town’s connections to slavery and colonial trade.
Whitehaven is also a gateway to St Bees, Ennerdale and the western Lake District. The harbour, coastal cycle routes and cultural venues provide enough for a full day, while rail links make the town easy to combine with Workington or Maryport.
