Your guide to Ambleside

Ambleside is a bustling Lake District town with outdoor shops, cafés, heritage and excellent access to Windermere, waterfalls, woodland and the surrounding fells.

Positioned near the northern end of Windermere, Ambleside has long been one of the Lake District’s most useful bases. The compact centre mixes traditional stone buildings with shops, food, cultural attractions and landmarks such as Bridge House, while Stock Ghyll Force is a short walk from town.

From the lake at Waterhead, visitors can travel by boat or follow routes towards Rydal, Grasmere, Troutbeck and the central fells. Ambleside works equally well for a day visit, a walking weekend or a longer car-free stay using buses and lake services.

02

Plan it well

The centre and main car parks become busy, especially at weekends and in school holidays. Arrive early or use public transport. Book popular restaurants and accommodation ahead, and prepare properly before heading onto higher ground.

Bank Holiday tip: use Ambleside Bus Interchange as the starting point for Little Langdale or Great Langdale rather than driving into the valleys.
