About Rheged Centre

Rheged is a cinema, gallery, café, shopping and creative venue at Redhills near Penrith. Its position just off the A66, a few minutes from M6 Junction 40, makes it a particularly useful stop on a wet day, between journeys or before continuing towards Keswick and the northern Lake District.

Rheged cinema

The independent cinema has two screens. Screen 1 has a giant screen approximately 18 metres or 60 feet wide, 260 seats, raked seating, surround sound and a 4K laser projector. Screen 2 is a standard cinema-size auditorium with 180 seats. Both use filtered fresh-air systems.

The programme mixes new releases and family films with live-streamed opera, ballet, theatre and music. It also includes selected Baby and Me, captioned, Silver and free screenings. The screen, certificate, start time and access format vary, so book from the live programme rather than assuming every film uses the giant screen.

More than a cinema

Rheged also contains an independent gallery, shops, a deli, creative classes and a 100-seat café. The café and deli give cinema visitors an easy meal or coffee option, while exhibitions and workshops can turn one screening into a longer half-day visit.

Opening times

General departments use different hours. The café is currently listed from 9am to 5pm, shops and gallery from 9.30am to 5pm, while cinema times follow the film programme. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday the deli can remain open until the start of the last film or event. Check the live page for the date of travel.

Parking and electric charging

Rheged has a 250-space visitor car park. Parking is free for customers for up to five hours. Anyone staying longer must register the vehicle number plate with a colleague in the café or deli; registration permits up to seven additional hours, with a maximum stay of 12 hours. The car park closes with Rheged and is locked overnight.

An ultra-rapid Tesla charging hub is available to compatible electric vehicles. The charging area has 24-hour access, but that does not mean the main visitor car park remains open overnight. Check charger compatibility and current payment terms before relying on it.

Accessibility

Rheged describes the building as fully wheelchair accessible. Two lifts serve the upper areas and cinema, accessible toilets are provided, and a Changing Places facility is available inside the filling station with RADAR-key access. Visitors who need a personal evacuation plan should contact Rheged in advance.

Getting there

Use Rheged Centre, Redhills, Penrith CA11 0DQ. Regular buses between Penrith and Keswick stop at Rheged, but times vary by day. Penrith North Lakes is the nearest mainline railway station, with onward bus or taxi travel required.

Our local note

One of Cumbria's best all-weather stops: a genuinely large cinema screen plus food, exhibitions and shopping. Remember to register the car if the visit will exceed five hours.
