Cumbria Brewers Fayre Closures: Carlisle, Barrow, Cockermouth and Howgate

Four Brewers Fayres close after 7 September service and Border Gate Beefeater follows on 10 September, while all five Premier Inns remain open.

Four Cumbrian Brewers Fayre restaurants have reached their final trading date, but the Premier Inn hotels beside them remain open. Lakeland Gate in Carlisle, Barrow, Cockermouth and The Howgate near Whitehaven close to public diners after service on Monday 7 September 2026.

Border Gate Beefeater at Carleton, beside Premier Inn Carlisle M6 Jct42, is due to follow after service on Thursday 10 September.

What visitors need to know

  • The restaurants close; the Premier Inns do not.
  • Hotel guests should still have breakfast, evening food and drinks.
  • The format differs by hotel and may be a Premier Inn restaurant, breakfast room or neighbouring third-party venue.
  • Meal Deals, children's breakfast offers and menus can vary by location.
  • Do not assume old public restaurant hours or online menus still apply.

Which Cumbria Brewers Fayres closed?

Lakeland Gate, Carlisle

Lakeland Gate Brewers Fayre at Walkmill Crescent, CA1 2WF, closes to public diners after 7 September service. Premier Inn Carlisle Central remains open with hotel food and drink.

Barrow-in-Furness

Barrow Brewers Fayre on North Road, LA14 2PW, closes after 7 September service. Premier Inn Barrow-in-Furness remains open.

Cockermouth

Cockermouth Brewers Fayre on Egremont Road, CA13 0QX, closes after 7 September service. Premier Inn Cockermouth remains open and its current parking-validation rules still matter.

The Howgate, near Whitehaven

The Howgate Brewers Fayre, CA28 6PL, closes under that brand after 7 September service. Premier Inn Whitehaven remains open.

The Howgate has a different possible future from the other three. The property was included in a conditional deal with Queensway Inns for conversion to a value-pub operation. Conditional is the important word: completion, the new brand and a public opening date had not been confirmed when checked. Read our dedicated Howgate development guide.

Border Gate Beefeater closes on 10 September

Border Gate Beefeater at Carleton, CA4 0AD, has a later final date because Whitbread set Thursday 10 September for all Beefeater closures. Premier Inn Carlisle M6 Jct42 remains open.

No universal last-order time has been announced. A closing date does not guarantee every item, table or usual service will remain available until a particular hour. Check with the restaurant before making a special final-day journey.

Can Premier Inn guests still get breakfast?

Yes. Whitbread explicitly says food and drink remain available in all its hotels. Guests can continue to obtain breakfast, evening meals and drinks, although the physical space and service style differ between sites.

That distinction matters for searchers finding an old restaurant page. The former Brewers Fayre or Beefeater may no longer accept public bookings even though a resident dining room operates next door or inside the hotel.

What happens to Meal Deals and kids' breakfast?

Whitbread says offers such as the Premier Inn Meal Deal and free breakfast for children vary by location. Treat the deal shown on your actual hotel booking as authoritative. If breakfast or dinner is important, save a copy of the inclusion and ask the hotel before arrival.

What will replace the restaurants?

There is no single answer. Whitbread says some sites will become Premier Inn restaurants, some hotels will use a breakfast room, some locations may add hotel bedrooms and others may have a neighbouring restaurant operated by another company.

That national explanation is not a confirmed redevelopment plan for each Cumbrian address. Cumbria Guru will update the individual Place records when a new operator, planning application, menu or public opening is formally announced.

Where should non-residents eat?

Public diners should not assume the replacement hotel facility is open to them. Use the relevant Carlisle, Barrow, Cockermouth or Whitehaven guide to find alternatives, then check opening hours and book popular evening tables directly.

Read Whitbread's official restaurant-closure FAQ.

Closure and hotel-dining information checked 7 September 2026. Replacement formats and public access can change as conversions progress.
