The Howgate is a family pub restaurant near Whitehaven, close to the A595. The Howgate remains open and trading as Brewers Fayre in August 2026. Whitbread is exiting the brand, with the wider Brewers Fayre estate scheduled to close under that name on 7 September 2026. The Howgate appears in the 53-site conditional sale agreement with Queensway Inns. Queensway intends to keep the acquired properties in hospitality use and relaunch them as a new affordable/value pub concept. The sale remains subject to final conditions. No new brand name, menu, handover timetable, temporary closure period or relaunch date has been announced for The Howgate. Current general hours: Monday-Saturday 11.30am-11pm; Sunday noon-10.30pm. Breakfast weekdays 6.30am-10.30am; weekends 7am-11am.

The building dates from the early 1900s and Whitbread says it was once used as a hospital, including caring for soldiers during the First World War.Closure update: The Howgate Brewers Fayre closed under that brand after service on 7 September 2026. Premier Inn Whitehaven remains open. The property's inclusion in a conditional sale to Queensway Inns does not yet establish a replacement pub name or opening date.
