Worth It

A well-supported way to turn a Derwentwater challenge into meaningful fundraising. Choose the distance conservatively and arrive in Keswick the night before if the early 20-mile registration would otherwise require a long drive.

Sands Trek Together Lake District is a fundraising walking challenge for the baby-loss charity Sands, based at the event village in Lower Fitz Park, Keswick. Entrants choose a supported, waymarked 10-mile/16km or 20-mile/32km route around Derwentwater.

The 20-mile group registers 6am-6.30am, attends a 6.45am briefing and starts at 7am. The 10-mile group registers 9.30am-10am, attends a 10.15am briefing and starts at 10.30am. Published registration is £35 for 20 miles and £30 for 10 miles, with a £250 fundraising pledge. Live promotions vary, so the checkout controls.

The routes are self-guided in the sense that participants walk at their own pace, but they are marked and supported by qualified mountain leaders and medics, and entrants carry GPS trackers. The 20-mile route includes Cat Bells. Minimum ages are 14 for 20 miles and 11 for 10 miles; under-18s must remain with their designated guardian.

Accessibility

Both routes are long, hilly outdoor challenges and are not step-free. The 20-mile route includes Cat Bells. Contact Sands/RAW Adventures before entry about medical needs or reasonable adjustments; under-18s must remain with a guardian.

Weather plan

The event normally proceeds in varied weather, but routes may change or the challenge may be postponed in extreme conditions. Carry the full published clothing, waterproof, food and water kit.
