The National Trust expects Wray Castle's interior to partially reopen in spring 2027, restoring public access after a closure that began in August 2025.
The update, published on 8 September 2026, is the clearest reopening timetable so far for the Gothic Revival landmark on Windermere's western shore. Visitors are initially expected to see the grand entrance hall, described by the Trust as church-like, and the castle's carved wooden panelling.
An exact opening day has not been announced. “Spring 2027” should therefore be treated as an expected window rather than a firm date, and the Trust has not yet confirmed prices, booking arrangements or a complete list of open rooms.
What is happening at Wray Castle?
The project began after the 1840s mock-Gothic building showed signs of deterioration. Surveys have examined the structure, roof, electrical systems, archaeology and historic fabric. The resulting programme includes roof repairs; new electrical and lighting systems; toilet, fire and security upgrades; a replacement sewage-treatment system; and conservation across the wider 64-acre estate.
One unusual part of the work is the proposed relocation of EE and Vodafone equipment from the roof and battlements. The National Trust says removing it will relieve structural stress and help address water entering the building. The mobile operators are consulting on replacement equipment designed to sit more discreetly within the Lake District World Heritage Site landscape.
The Trust says it has invested £280,000 in Wray Castle and its estate so far. Some work, including the sewage system and wider conservation phases, depends on permissions and will continue beyond the first partial reopening.
What remains open at Wray in 2026?
The castle interior is closed, but this is not a full estate closure. Visitors can still explore parkland, woodland and lakeshore paths, see the exterior, boathouse and miniature harbour, use Joey's Café and toilets, and join advertised walks and family activities.
Pages from the Potter Family Album, an outdoor exhibition using photographs by Beatrix Potter's father Rupert, is displayed around the grounds until March 2027. Potter stayed at Wray as a teenager in 1882, beginning the family connection with the Lake District that later shaped her life and conservation legacy.
What else is planned for 2027?
The Trust plans a summer trail and family programme in the grounds to mark 125 years since the commercial publication of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. That is separate from the interior reopening and should not be read as confirmation that the whole castle will open at once.
How to visit before the reopening
The most memorable approach is often by boat. Windermere Lake Cruises' seasonal Green Cruise serves Wray jetty from Ambleside Waterhead and Brockhole, normally between April and October. Walkers and cyclists can also use the west-shore tracks, while the 505 bus corridor stops nearby followed by an off-road walk.
Drivers use narrow local roads and should note that Wray does not provide castle parking for coaches, campervans or minibuses. The current car-park tariff is £7 for two hours, £8.50 for four hours or £10 all day, with JustPark code 80715. National Trust members park free after scanning their card at the machine.
