Hawkshead

Traffic is largely kept outside the old centre, allowing visitors to explore its arches, alleys, squares and heritage buildings on foot. The grammar school attended by Wordsworth and nearby sites linked to Beatrix Potter add important literary interest.

Hawkshead is a natural base for Grizedale Forest, Near Sawrey, Coniston and Esthwaite Water. Its combination of heritage, food and accessible walking makes it one of the south Lakes’ most rewarding village stops.
