Cockermouth X4, X5 and 600 Bus Diversions: October 2026 Stop Changes

Which stops are affected by the unexpected closure, when disruption is expected to end and how to check individual services.

Checked Thursday 29 October 2026. Passengers using buses through Cockermouth are being advised to check their stops before travelling after an unexpected road closure affected Stagecoach services X4, X5 and 600. A local report published on Wednesday 28 October, citing Stagecoach, says disruption is expected until Saturday 31 October. The known impact includes the X5 being unable to serve Oakhurst and Gallowbarrow, and the 600 not serving Gallowbarrow while the diversion remains in place.

Verification note: We found the detailed stop changes in a named local report quoting the operator, but were unable to establish a matching current public Stagecoach disruption page giving the precise road, temporary stop locations or every X4 movement. This is a time-limited warning, not a substitute for live journey information. We will not invent a diversion route or claim a replacement stop is confirmed when it is not.

Which Cockermouth buses are affected?

ServiceReported changesWhat to check
X4Named as affected by the unexpected closure; exact omitted stops not independently verified.Check your individual departure and its boarding stop through Stagecoach.
X5Reported not serving Oakhurst or Gallowbarrow during the disruption.Do not rely on those stops without checking current operator guidance.
600Reported not serving Gallowbarrow.Confirm the nearest operational stop and the journey direction.

The reported end date is Saturday 31 October. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed reopening time. A road closure can be lifted early or extended. Stagecoach's own live information and on-street notices take precedence over this dated guide.

Why does the disruption matter to visitors?

Cockermouth is a useful transport interchange for the northern Lake District and West Cumbria. The X4 and X5 form part of important east-west connections involving Workington, Cockermouth, Keswick and onward journeys. Service 600 provides links across northern and western Cumbria. A missed stop may affect a hotel arrival, a train connection, a visit to the Wordsworth House area or a bus-based day trip to Keswick.

Visitors relying on a single last bus of the day should take particular care: it is not enough to know that a route number still operates. The temporary boarding point and scheduled departure could differ from your usual stop.

Oakhurst and Gallowbarrow: what is known?

The reported omissions are the Oakhurst stop area on the A5086 at Cockermouth Moor and Gallowbarrow in Cockermouth. Those places appear on published bus-stop and route maps, but the existence of a normal scheduled stop on a third-party timetable does not establish that it is served during a temporary diversion. Stagecoach should be consulted for the nearest safe boarding place.

The publicly available report does not give a complete stop-by-stop list for X4, nor a diversion map and individual replacement stops. We have therefore not published unverified instructions to wait at Main Street, Crown Street, a school stop or any other particular location. Instructions used during August's Tour of Britain event were for a different, dated closure and should not be reused for this October disruption.

How to check your bus before travelling

  1. Open Stagecoach's website or app and select the exact service number, journey direction and date.
  2. Check the disruptions list as well as the ordinary timetable; a published timetable can still display a stop that a diverted bus is missing.
  3. Where possible, use live vehicle tracking or ask the operator to confirm the nearest currently served stop.
  4. Allow extra time if transferring to another service or a train.
  5. Follow posted temporary-stop signs and be careful crossing unfamiliar roads to reach an alternative boarding point.

Can you still visit Cockermouth?

Yes. This is a bus-service disruption, not an announcement that the entire town centre or all local businesses are closed. Cockermouth remains an attractive base for independent shops, cafés, galleries, museums and journeys into the western Lake District. The Cumbria Guru Cockermouth guide helps visitors find current Places and things to do, while the Keswick guide is useful when planning an onward trip.

If you decide to drive instead, check the current Fairfield Car Park and other official parking options before arriving. Diversion-related traffic could still affect local roads even where a car park remains open.

An important separate change: winter bus timetables from 2 November

Stagecoach has also announced its Lake District winter timetable from Monday 2 November 2026. This is separate from the unexpected October road closure. A trip on 2 November should be planned using the winter timetable even if the temporary diversion has ended on schedule. Do not confuse a new timetable or a bus route's permanent stopping pattern with a short-lived roadwork diversion.

When should normal bus routes return?
