Whitehaven West Pier Closed After Storm Boelo: Lighthouse and Access Update

The harbour remains operational for vessels, but the historic West Pier is closed to pedestrians while storm-damaged electrical equipment is repaired.

Checked Thursday 29 October 2026. Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners have temporarily closed West Pier to pedestrian access following damage caused by Storm Boelo on Sunday 25 October. The harbour authority's Local Notice to Mariners No. 6 of 2026, issued on Monday 26 October, confirms that the navigational beacon on West Pier Lighthouse failed following the storm and remains subject to inspection and repair. The public must not walk onto the affected pier while the safety restriction is in force.

This is an access closure affecting one of the most familiar parts of Whitehaven Harbour. It does not mean the entire harbour is closed, nor does the notice say the town's shops, cafés, museums or other waterfront facilities have shut. The commissioners expressly say vessel access to the harbour is not impeded by this lighthouse problem.

What happened to the West Pier Lighthouse?

Storm Boelo damaged the power supply serving the West Pier navigation light. The commissioners said the beacon was out of service from Sunday 25 October and that work to diagnose and repair the fault had begun. Subsequent local reporting, citing harbour officials, describes a damaged cable that must be recovered and restored before the structure can safely reopen. The official notice is the controlling source for the public closure: pedestrian access has been suspended and will require a further update before people can return.

The lighthouse is a working navigational aid as well as a historic feature in photographs of Whitehaven. The failure matters to the harbour's operators, but visitors must distinguish between a failed light and general access to the marina. The commissioners did not announce that all vessels were barred from entering Whitehaven.

Can you still visit Whitehaven Harbour?

Yes, the town and wider harbour area remain visitor destinations. The specific prohibition relates to the affected West Pier. Whitehaven's Georgian streets, Market Place, harbourside attractions and cafés can still be explored subject to normal operating arrangements and any separately posted restrictions. The official notice says the beacon on North Pier was fixed, but it does not independently confirm that every part of North Pier is open to pedestrians: check on-site barriers and harbour notices.

If you are visiting Whitehaven for an October half-term day out, start with the Cumbria Guru Whitehaven guide, which links the town's attractions, food places and car parks. For an indoor alternative to a pier walk, consider the Beacon Museum, subject to its own admission and opening information. The Storm Boelo visitor guide brings together the wider dated storm context.

What about fishing, photography and family visits?

West Pier is a tempting place for photography and angling, which makes a clear warning essential: do not step over barriers, enter the closed pier, climb onto the stonework or attempt to reach the lighthouse. A historic pier can contain exposed drops and wave-washed steps even in ordinary weather. After a storm, damaged electrical equipment and loose materials introduce additional hazards. A calm-looking sea on a later day is not evidence that the electrical and structural safety work has finished.

Parents and guardians should ensure young people know the restriction also applies to informal trips to fish or take photographs. The harbour commissioners will determine when it is safe to reopen, not the weather forecast alone.

Where can you park instead?

Parking arrangements around Whitehaven are separate from the pier closure. For normal visitor information see Cumbria Guru's Beacon Car Park, North Shore Car Park and town destination listings, where available. Check the operator signs and arrival route: the lighthouse safety notice does not automatically establish a closure of any named town-centre car park.

A brief history of the harbour's piers

Whitehaven's piers and navigation lights are a reminder of its long history as a major port serving the Irish Sea. The town's planned Georgian street pattern, historic quays and maritime buildings remain central to its appeal today. A visit to Whitehaven is worth combining with the Beacon's displays and a walk through the older streets, while respecting any fenced-off harbour areas. The West Pier photograph used here was taken in 2022; it documents the location before Storm Boelo and is not evidence of the current condition of the cable or lighthouse.

When will West Pier reopen?

No date has been confirmed. The harbour authority says further updates will be issued after repairs. Until a positive reopening announcement appears, the safe editorial position is that access is suspended. An old online photograph, an outdated map or a previous visitor review cannot override an official safety notice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Whitehaven West Pier open for walking?

No. The harbour authority suspended pedestrian access following storm damage, as confirmed in its 26 October notice.

Is all of Whitehaven Harbour closed?

No general closure is announced in the West Pier notice. The commissioners state that vessel access is not currently impeded by the West Pier light failure.

Is North Pier's lighthouse also broken?

The same notice records a separate North Pier beacon failure that had already been repaired. Do not infer unrestricted pedestrian access to every part of North Pier from that statement.

Can I go fishing from West Pier?

Not while pedestrian access is suspended. Follow the harbour authority's safety notices and barriers.

Who can confirm when the pier reopens?

Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners. The published contact is the marina office on 01946 692435; telephone before a special journey and check the newest official notice.
