The Winter Droving will take place in Carlisle rather than Penrith in 2026. Eden Arts has confirmed that the event will form part of a new Carlisle Carnivale featuring The Winter Droving on Saturday 24 October 2026.
The announcement is a significant change for one of Cumbria''s best-known autumn events. Winter Droving was created by Eden Arts in Penrith and has been staged there for 14 editions, building a reputation for masks, music, street theatre, fire, community participation and its torchlit twilight procession.

Why is Winter Droving moving to Carlisle?
Eden Arts says the decision is fundamentally about financial viability.
The 2025 event was cancelled shortly before it was due to happen because forecast winds made temporary structures unsafe. Eden Arts later said that cancellation left the charity carrying a loss of around £20,000.
For 2026, the organisation says the overall Penrith funding and sponsorship package needed to deliver the event securely was not in place. At the same time, a partnership opportunity developed in Carlisle that made it possible to keep the artistic programme together rather than cancel or substantially reduce the event.
What will Carlisle Carnivale include?
Eden Arts says the new Carlisle event will keep the heart of Winter Droving.
Confirmed elements named in the announcement include:
- the Drovers Cup
- dog fancy dress
- music and street performance
- work led by internationally known theatre-maker Adrian Schvarzstein
- opportunities for the public to join the procession, wear masks, dance, volunteer and carry fire torches
- a twilight procession with a new large-scale finale
The detailed 2026 timetable, exact streets, procession route, road closures and parking arrangements have not yet been published. Cumbria Guru will add those details when they are confirmed.
Is Winter Droving still happening in Penrith in 2026?
No. Older event pages elsewhere online may still say that Winter Droving returns to Penrith on 24 October. Those listings pre-date the 10 September relocation announcement and are now out of date.
If you booked accommodation or made plans around a Penrith event, check cancellation terms and decide whether you want to transfer the trip to Carlisle instead.
Is Carlisle the permanent new home of Winter Droving?
Eden Arts says it has not announced Carlisle as Winter Droving''s permanent home.
The organiser says it would like Winter Droving to have a future in Penrith too if a sustainable funding partnership can be rebuilt. For now, the confirmed 2026 event is in Carlisle.
How big could the event be?
The Winter Droving has previously attracted very large crowds. Eden Arts'' 2025 accounts record approximately 25,000 visitors at the 2024 edition in Penrith.
That does not guarantee the same attendance in Carlisle, but it explains why parking, transport and city-centre movement will matter once the route is published.
Planning a Carlisle visit
Until the event footprint is announced, it is too early to recommend one specific car park as the best choice.
Start with the Carlisle destination guide. Carlisle railway station is central and could become a particularly useful option for a large city-centre event, while visitors staying overnight have a much wider accommodation choice than treating the day as a drive-in visit.
Once Eden Arts publishes the stage locations and procession route, Cumbria Guru will map the closest car parks and identify which ones sit outside any road-closure zone.
What happens to the Penrith story?
Penrith remains central to Winter Droving''s history. The event was created there and 14 editions built the traditions now being taken to Carlisle.
For visitors, however, the practical rule for 2026 is simple: do not follow an older Penrith listing. Travel to Carlisle only after checking the final Eden Arts programme.
