Cumbria has unveiled its first official community flag, a unifying emblem that represents the whole county and can be used proudly by everyone.
The Cumbria Community Flag marks a milestone in the county’s story. While many English counties have long had their own flags, Cumbria has only now gained a single emblem to represent it. The launch was led by the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, who described it as a flag for “everyone who chooses to embrace it.”
The flag is designed to be inclusive and widely used, from civic buildings and festivals to schools, businesses and private homes. It does not replace district or town flags but adds a shared banner that unites the entire county.
These elements combine to capture both the natural beauty of the landscape and the strength of the communities that call Cumbria home.
Flags carry powerful meaning. They are symbols of identity, belonging and pride. The Cumbria Community Flag provides a single emblem that people across the county can connect with, whether displayed at public events, sports matches, cultural festivals or local businesses. It helps to strengthen Cumbria’s identity both within the county and to the wider world.
Over time, the Cumbria Community Flag is expected to become a familiar sight across the county. You may see it flown on civic buildings, at local celebrations, festivals and agricultural shows, as well as on private properties, in classrooms, and at sporting events. Printed flags and digital graphics will also become more accessible as the design spreads into wider use.
