Places to stay near Derwentwater

Compare places to stay with practical access to Derwentwater, from central Keswick hotels near the northern lakeshore to country stays in Borrowdale at the southern end of the lake. “Near” on this page means useful access for a visit, not necessarily a room directly on the shoreline.

Choose the side of the lake that best matches your plans, because Keswick, Borrowdale and the east shore offer very different bases.

Keswick or Borrowdale?

Keswick is the most convenient base for shops, restaurants, the bus station and evenings in town. The northern Derwentwater lakeshore, Theatre by the Lake and the Keswick Launch area are accessible on foot from many central hotels.

Borrowdale places you farther from the town centre but closer to the southern lake, Lodore, Grange and valley walks. It can be a stronger choice when the landscape and walking routes are the main purpose of the trip.

Do not judge distance by the map alone

Lake District roads, gradients and footpaths mean a short straight-line distance can still involve a longer journey. Check the actual route from your accommodation to the part of Derwentwater you want to use.

If you are travelling without a car, compare current bus services and the walking distance to the nearest useful stop. Parking also varies sharply between central Keswick and countryside hotels.

Build a Derwentwater-based trip

For a more urban base, see town-centre hotels. If parking matters, compare Keswick hotels with parking.
