About Tarn Hows

Tarn Hows is a famous Lake District beauty spot between Coniston and Hawkshead, managed by the National Trust. Its calm water, surrounding trees and distant fells create a memorable setting for a relatively gentle circular walk.

The circular walk

The National Trust describes a popular circuit of roughly 1¾ to 2 miles, depending on the route description used, on a generally firm gravel path with some gradients. Most people can allow about an hour, with extra time for photographs, rest stops or a picnic.

The route gives frequent views across the tarn, with changing light making it particularly attractive for photographers. The surrounding countryside provides options for longer walks if you want to extend the outing.

Accessibility and facilities

Tarn Hows is one of the more accessible major Lake District viewpoints. The National Trust advertises an accessible path, benches and Tramper all-terrain mobility scooters that can be booked ahead. This does not mean every part of the area is level or suitable for all wheelchairs; check the access statement.

There are toilets, parking and seasonal refreshments near the main car park. Dogs are welcome on leads, especially important because livestock graze nearby.

Getting there

The site is signposted from the B5285 between Hawkshead and Coniston. The National Trust advises following local signs rather than relying on satnav for the final approach. The main car park is charged for non-members and can fill in busy holiday periods.

The path and landscape are generally accessible in daylight, but winter weather can create ice, slippery surfaces or difficult road conditions. The café and mobility services have their own hours.
