About Coniston Launch

Coniston Launch operates the main scheduled passenger-launch service on Coniston Water. Boats leave from Coniston Boat Landings on Lake Road and connect a network of jetties around the lake, allowing visitors to use the service both as a sightseeing cruise and as practical transport for walks and attractions.

Regular routes include a shorter northern service and the Wild Cat Island cruise, with seasonal southern-lake services also operating. Depending on the timetable, stops can include The Coniston Inn, Torver, Sunny Bank and Brantwood. Hop-on and hop-off travel makes it possible to walk one section of the shore and return by boat rather than retracing the same route.

Coniston Launch also runs themed cruises. The Swallows and Amazons cruise explores locations linked to Arthur Ransome and the screen adaptations, while the Campbells on Coniston cruise follows the story of Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell's speed-record attempts. Private charters and group cruises are also available.

Brantwood is one of the most useful stops, with the jetty giving direct access to John Ruskin's historic house and gardens. Coniston Launch also works well for walkers using routes between Coniston, Torver and the quieter western shore.

The launches are traditional vessels. All passengers have to embark and disembark using steps and a handrail, so full step-free wheelchair boarding is not available. The operator asks passengers who may need additional assistance to contact them in advance.

Services are seasonal and weather dependent. Summer and winter timetables differ and individual jetties can be affected by operating conditions, so always check the current timetable and service status before relying on a specific boat for a one-way walk.

The Cumbria Guru verdict

Our local note

The most useful boat service on Coniston Water because it is both a cruise and a practical way to link Brantwood, Torver and shoreline walks.
