About Coniston Boating Centre

Coniston Boating Centre is the main public boat-hire and launching base on the western shore of Coniston Water, around half a mile from Coniston village. Operated as a Lake District National Park visitor facility, the centre has been helping people get onto the lake since 1977.

Hire options include electric motor boats, rowing boats, sit-on-top kayaks, Canadian canoes and stand-up paddleboards. Different craft have their own age, experience and booking requirements, and advance online booking is strongly recommended during busy periods.

The centre also provides launching and storage for privately owned craft. Launch charges vary by vessel size, third-party insurance is required for boats using the managed launch facilities, and visitors are asked to ensure craft are clean before entering Coniston Water to reduce the spread of invasive species.

The adjoining Bluebird Café provides food, hot drinks, cakes and ice cream beside the lake. Toilets are next to the car park, EV charging points are available and pay parking serves both the boating centre and Coniston Pier area. Coniston Launch boats and the National Trust's Steam Yacht Gondola also depart from this lakeside hub.

Swimming is permitted from the boating-centre area, but Coniston is a busy navigable lake. The National Park recommends choosing a route close to the shoreline and remaining highly visible because motor boats, sailing boats and passenger vessels share the water.

Boat hire is weather dependent and individual activities can have specific restrictions. Check availability and book through the official website before travelling if getting onto the water is the main purpose of your visit.
