Muncaster Castle, Gardens & Estate

The Hawk & Owl Centre presents daily flying displays during the main season, featuring owls, falcons, eagles and vultures. The indoor World of Owls display is followed by outdoor displays on the Flying Meadow, where a designated dog-friendly viewing area is available. Optional owl experiences and bird adoptions can also be booked separately. Families can explore the Enchanted Trail, adventure playground, Yeti Adventure Quarry and Giant Swing. The Weapons Hall adds hands-on medieval activities, with included have-a-go sessions covering age-appropriate archery, crossbow and axe throwing, while longer masterclasses require an upgraded ticket. The Stables Café, gift shop, picnic areas and regular festivals make it easy to spend most of a day on the estate. For the 2026 main season, Muncaster is open daily from 21 March to 23 October. The gardens are open from 10.30am until 6pm, the Hawk & Owl Centre from 10.30am until 4.30pm, the Castle from noon until 4pm and The Stables Café from 8.30am until 4.30pm. Castle access may be unavailable on selected private-function dates, and opening arrangements change outside the main season, so check the official website before travelling. Dogs are welcome in the gardens but must not enter the Castle or Hawk & Owl Centre. Most main attractions have step-free access by paved or gravel routes, although parts of the historic Castle and wider gardens are not fully accessible. Accessible parking is available through Church Gate, alongside accessible toilets, free wheelchair hire, a bookable mobility scooter and free carer admission with accepted evidence. Day-visitor parking is free. Use postcode CA18 1RD for the main car park during the main season, or CA18 1RQ for Church Gate, accessible parking, coach access and winter entry. Muncaster is around one mile from Ravenglass railway station and can also be reached by the Stagecoach 7 and X7 services on operating days. Advance ticket booking is recommended, particularly during school holidays, festivals and special events. Muncaster Fringe 2026 Muncaster Castle is producing Muncaster Fringe 2026, a month-long combined arts programme at the estate and selected locations across West Cumbria. The festival includes live music, theatre, comedy, poetry, visual arts and workshops and is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Remaining August performances include WILDER! in the Drawing Room on 20 and 21 August, plus She Ran Away to the Circus and Search for the Missing Sparkle on the Castle Lawn from 24 to 27 August. Some Fringe performances are included with normal Muncaster admission while others require separate tickets.
