Visitors heading towards Gosforth, Wasdale, Eskdale, Ravenglass and the western Lake District should plan late-evening journeys around the current A595 Newmill-Gosforth phase.
Current A595 restrictions
- Published phase: Monday 14 to Saturday 19 September 2026
- Restrictions begin: 8pm
- Convoy access: 8pm-10pm
- Full closure: 10pm-5am
Convoy access is controlled passage through the work area, not normal free-flow traffic. Delays are possible, so do not plan around reaching the works a few minutes before 10pm.
Why this matters for Wasdale
Gosforth is one of the principal gateways for Wasdale. Friday-night accommodation arrivals, walkers returning late and visitors travelling towards Wasdale Head need to consider both the A595 restrictions and the slower final valley roads.
Ravenglass, Muncaster and Eskdale
Journeys to Ravenglass, Muncaster, Eskdale, Seascale and nearby accommodation can also be affected depending on direction of travel. Follow the signed diversion during a full closure. Do not use unsuitable minor roads or mountain passes simply because a sat-nav suggests a shorter alternative.
Is this the final night?
The council's published programme runs to Saturday 19 September. That is a scheduled end date, not proof that every restriction has already finished. Cumbria Guru will keep Newmill-Gosforth marked as active until completion is confirmed through the council or live roadworks information.
Check before setting off
Roadworks can change with progress, weather and site conditions. Check Cumberland Council's roads information and live roadworks data before a late journey, particularly if you have accommodation check-in, a train connection or another fixed arrival time.
