About Holehird Gardens

A peaceful garden above Windermere

Holehird Gardens occupies a hillside setting off the A592 near Windermere, with wide views towards the Lakeland fells. Managed and developed by volunteers from the Lakeland Horticultural Society, the gardens offer a rewarding change of pace from the busier lakeshore attractions. Carefully designed plantings fill a variety of microclimates, from sheltered beds in the walled garden to rocky and woodland areas.

What to see across the seasons

The ten-acre garden includes a walled garden, herbaceous borders, alpine and rock plants, woodland and specialist collections. The garden is recognised as an RHS Partner Garden and holds important National Plant Collections, including astilbes and other groups. Spring bulbs, summer borders, autumn colours and winter structure all offer different reasons to return. Specialist plants may be for sale at certain times during the main season.

Admission and opening

The operator states that the gardens are open daily from dawn to dusk. There is no set entry charge, but donations are requested because the garden depends on visitor contributions and volunteer work. Volunteer-staffed Visitor Information usually operates during the April-to-October season, when leaflets, plant advice and occasional hot drinks may be available. Do not assume those services operate on winter visits.

Getting there and access

Follow brown tourist signs from the A592 rather than relying exclusively on satellite navigation, particularly when approaching from the north. Free parking is available by the walled garden, with overflow arrangements on busy days. Some paths and the walled garden are more accessible than the steep rockery and fellside borders; a disabled toilet is available with RADAR-key access. Only assistance dogs may enter. Allow time to explore slowly and check the operator’s guidance for wheelchair-friendly routes.

Our local note

Excellent for garden lovers and a quieter Windermere outing. Entry is donation-based, although slopes and steps make access uneven.
