About The Samling

The Samling is a small luxury country-house hotel set high above the eastern shore of Windermere, between Windermere and Ambleside. Rather than operating like a large resort, it focuses on a limited number of individually designed rooms, highly personalised service, extensive private grounds and destination dining overlooking the lake.Rooms and settingThe hotel currently has 12 bedrooms, suites and cottages, each individually designed and named after a Lake District location. Interiors use muted colours inspired by the landscape, with Hypnos mattresses, deep-filled pillows and a deliberately understated style rather than a standardised chain-hotel layout. The Samling sits within around 67 acres of countryside, including ornamental water gardens, wildflower areas, woodland paths and productive kitchen gardens.

Its elevated position gives broad views south along Windermere and west towards the Coniston fells. The grounds are a significant part of the stay, particularly for guests who want privacy and scenery without leaving the hotel.Michelin-starred diningThe Restaurant at The Samling holds one Michelin star in the current Michelin Guide. The glass-fronted dining room looks across Windermere and the Michelin Guide highlights both the setting and the technical quality of the cooking.Executive Head Chef Robby Jenks leads the kitchen. Menus change with the seasons and use ingredients from the hotel's greenhouse, gardens and woodland where possible, supplemented by local and carefully sourced British produce. The current tasting menu is served Tuesday to Saturday evenings and is priced at GBP 175 per person before optional wine pairings and supplements. Dietary requirements need to be discussed in advance because the kitchen cannot accommodate every allergy or intolerance. The restaurant operates at around 48 covers. That capacity, together with the current kitchen, enhanced wine cellar and Chef's Table, dates from a major redevelopment completed in 2017. Some recent search results make that redevelopment look new, but it should be treated as established background rather than a 2026 reopening.Chef's Table and wineThe Chef's Table sits directly opposite the kitchen and is designed for up to six guests. It provides a more immersive version of The Samling's dining experience, with a menu created for the table, close interaction with the kitchen team and a behind-the-scenes element after the meal.Wine is an unusually important part of The Samling offer. The hotel has a substantial award-winning cellar and offers wine-focused experiences as well as pairings with the tasting menu. The Reverie is the hotel bar, providing cocktails and drinks with views towards Windermere and the Coniston range. The GatheringGuests who do not want the full tasting-menu experience can use The Gathering, The Samling's more relaxed dining option. It currently operates for lunches through the week and for Sunday and Monday evening dining, with a shorter and less formal menu than the Michelin-starred restaurant. Current lunch offers and serving times can change, so check the hotel's live food-and-drink information before travelling specifically to dine.Arriving by waterThe Samling also has a rebuilt jetty on Windermere. Guests arriving by suitable boat can arrange to use the jetty and continue up to the hotel, adding an unusual way to combine the property with time on the lake. The hotel's jetty arrangements are not a public ferry stop, so boat arrival should be organised with the property in advance.Parking, accessibility and practical informationCurrent Booking.com information confirms free private parking, accessible parking, facilities for disabled guests and an electric-vehicle charging point. The hotel also lists a hot tub/Jacuzzi among its facilities. Because this is a country-house property on sloping Lakeland ground and room layouts are individual, guests who need step-free access, a particular bathroom layout or minimal walking should discuss their exact requirements before booking. The Samling is on Ambleside Road, Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 1LR. Windermere railway station is the most convenient rail gateway, with the final part of the journey normally completed by taxi. The hotel's secluded setting means it works best for visitors looking for a quiet luxury stay rather than immediate access to shops and nightlife on foot.Room rates can be high and vary considerably by room and date. Restaurant reservations, Chef's Table bookings and specific room categories should be arranged well ahead, particularly for weekends and special occasions.

The Cumbria Guru verdict

Worth It

One of Cumbria's strongest choices for a small-scale luxury stay built around scenery and serious food. The real reasons to book are the panoramic Windermere setting, only 12 individually designed rooms, 67-acre grounds and Michelin-starred restaurant. It is expensive and intentionally secluded, so it suits special-occasion stays much better than visitors wanting a busy town-centre base.
