About Castlerigg Stone Circle
Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of the Lake District's most important prehistoric landmarks and one of the strongest free places to visit near Keswick. English Heritage describes the monument as a ring of 38 standing stones, probably constructed around 4,500 years ago in the late Neolithic period.
The circle stands on an exposed plateau east of Keswick, with wide views towards the surrounding fells. There is no attraction admission charge and no normal ticket booking requirement. English Heritage states that the site is open at any reasonable time during daylight hours.

Parking at the site is limited, so walking from Keswick or using public transport can be a better option at busy times. The ground is uneven and can become muddy and slippery after wet weather. Dogs are welcome on leads, and visitors should be aware that sheep graze the site.
Castlerigg works particularly well as a short heritage stop, photography location or part of a wider outdoor day around Keswick. Respect the stones, livestock and surrounding land, and check the current English Heritage visitor information before travelling if conditions are poor.
