About Cartmel Priory

Cartmel’s most striking historic building

Cartmel Priory has stood at the centre of village life for more than eight centuries. The church, formally the Priory Church of St Mary and St Michael, remains an active place of worship while welcoming visitors interested in medieval architecture, carved stonework and the history of the Cartmel Peninsula.

What makes the building special

The great church was founded for Augustinian canons around the end of the twelfth century. Its large scale, unusual arrangement of towers, intricate historic features and stained glass make it a memorable contrast with Cartmel’s compact streets. The building survived the dissolution of its wider monastic community because of its continuing parish-church role. It is well worth spending time looking upward at the structure as well as exploring the interior.

When to visit

The Priory advertises general visitor opening from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. As a working church it may be unavailable during services, weddings, funerals and events, so check the latest notices before travelling. Sunday access principally revolves around worship rather than standard sightseeing. Entry is free, with donations welcomed to support the building’s care.

Accessibility and facilities

Most of the church is accessible to wheelchair users according to the Priory. There are no toilets inside the church; public toilets are available elsewhere in Cartmel, including near the racecourse car park. Visitor parking is normally in the village’s designated car parks rather than directly beside the church.

Make a day of Cartmel

Combine the Priory with Cartmel’s independent shops, cafés and village streets. The historic setting lends itself to a slower visit, while the wider area offers walks and attractions around the southern Lake District. On race days or during major festivals, allow extra time for parking and crowds.
