Worth It
A particularly strong festival for visitors who want more than a single guided walk. Choose activities to match your fitness and experience rather than simply booking the longest route. <!-- CG-A684-BELLOW-HILL-2026 -->Do not treat the road diversion as a walking-route diversion and do not enter the excavation. See /blog/a684-sedbergh-garsdale-closure-september-october-2026.
Sedbergh Walking & Wellbeing Festival runs from Sunday 13 to Sunday 20 September 2026, bringing together guided walks, practical outdoor talks and wellbeing activities around Sedbergh, the Howgills and Lune Valley.
The festival launches at the People's Hall at 3pm on Sunday 13 September. The main guided-walk programme begins the following morning.
Launch - Sunday 13 September
From 3pm to 5pm visitors can meet local health, wellbeing and creative providers. From 5pm to 6pm there is a welcome session with Mark Kenyon and a Freet Barefoot Shoes presentation by Daisy Jackson. Open-mic music and singing starts from 6pm, with healthy food and a bar also promoted.

The new 120-mile Westmorland and Furness Way is officially launched on Tuesday 15 September as part of festival week.
Choosing activities
The programme ranges from shorter valley-and-fell walks to demanding high-level days. Read each activity description before booking because terrain, ascent and fitness requirements differ significantly.
Weather and safety
High Howgills routes can become serious mountain days in poor weather. Take appropriate clothing, footwear, food and water and follow the guide's instructions.
Accessibility
Accessibility varies substantially between town-based sessions and countryside walks. Check the specific activity before booking and contact the organiser if you need step-free access or other support.
Weather plan
Outdoor walks are weather dependent. High-level Howgills routes require suitable equipment and may be altered for safety.
