Five swimming pools, one very low price and a useful October half-term activity: Cumberland Council has confirmed that eligible schoolchildren aged up to 16 from the Cumberland area can attend specified swimming sessions for just 10p between Monday 26 and Friday 30 October 2026. The offer covers venues in Carlisle, Cockermouth, Workington, Whitehaven and Wigton. It's a particularly useful indoor activity when autumn weather makes outdoor plans less appealing.
Important: this is a Cumberland local scheme, not an unrestricted 10p entry ticket for every visiting family. The discount applies to the specific published sessions, not every swim during the week. Check with the pool before travelling about booking, availability, child supervision, adult admission and any evidence needed to establish eligibility.

Who qualifies for 10p swimming?
The council describes the offer as being for all schoolchildren aged up to 16 years old from the Cumberland area. Cumberland covers Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland's former local-government areas, including Workington, Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Maryport and Wigton. The council statement does not explain exactly what evidence pools may request, whether advance registration is needed or whether accompanying adults pay the standard entry price. Those arrangements must be checked with the venue.
Holidaymakers staying in the Lake District should not assume their children qualify simply because they are visiting Cumbria. If you are not eligible for the local discount, ask the pool about its normal public-swim price and available family sessions instead.
Where to swim: a venue-by-venue family guide
The Sands Centre, Carlisle
The Sands Centre combines a modern swimming complex with entertainment and leisure facilities on Newmarket Road. The official 10p sessions run 10–10.50am on Monday 26, Wednesday 28 and Friday 30 October. The council also advertises a separate GLL Swim for £1 scheme on Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29 October; check its times, conditions and who qualifies directly with GLL rather than assuming the 10p rules apply. Nearby, Bitts Park Car Park is another central Carlisle parking reference, but do not assume it is the closest or cheapest for your chosen pool entrance. See our Carlisle guide for other things to do.
Cockermouth Leisure Centre
Cockermouth's sessions start later in the day, running 1–2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This can fit around a morning visit to the town centre or an indoor family activity. Check the leisure centre's official address, parking instructions and current timetable before travelling. Explore Cockermouth for nearby cafés, museums and visitor ideas.
Workington Leisure Centre
Workington's selected 10p swims run 10–11am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, making them a morning option for West Cumbrian families. These are the hours of the discounted sessions, not necessarily the pool's complete public opening times. Find other activities through our Workington visitor guide.
Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre, Whitehaven
Whitehaven's Copeland Pool offers the half-term discount 1–2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This could combine with a family visit around the town and harbour, but check opening arrangements for other attractions separately, particularly while storm-related travel disruption is possible. Use the Whitehaven destination guide to explore local ideas.
Wigton Baths
Wigton has slightly different timings: 11am–noon on Monday 26 and Friday 30 October, and 11.30am–12.30pm on Wednesday 28 October. Check the day carefully before setting off, as the Wednesday session starts 30 minutes later. See the Wigton destination page for local context.
Do you have to book?
The council's 23 October release confirms prices, qualifying children, venues and session times but does not specify a universal booking method for all five operators. The venues are supported by Everyone Active, GLL and Wigton Baths Trust, so booking processes may differ. Contact the chosen pool before travelling to ask whether the 10p session must be reserved online, whether walk-ins are accepted, and how many places remain.
What about adults, younger children and swimming ability?
The offer is described for children aged up to 16. The council announcement does not confirm that adult swimming is included for 10p, or whether accompanying adults may enter free as spectators. Normal pool supervision rules still apply, and these can depend on a child's age and swimming ability. Ask about required adult-to-child ratios, access to shallow water, accessible changing, pool hoists and other facilities directly. Bring appropriate swimwear and any items required by the venue's usual policy.
Travel, parking and an autumn weather note
Five pools across Cumberland give families choices, but travel during the October half-term weekend is also affected by Storm Boelo. The main discount starts on Monday 26 October; any disruption or changed pool opening hours should be checked again on the actual day. If you are travelling by bus, consider the return journey before booking a slot. For background on regional travel changes, see our Cumberland bus service update.
Frequently asked questions
Is every swimming session 10p during half-term?
No. The published offer only covers selected dates and times at the five named pools.
Can tourists use the 10p swimming offer?
The council specifies children from the Cumberland area. Visiting families should check eligibility with the pool rather than assume the discount applies.
Is the Sands Centre £1 swim the same offer?
No. The council separately mentions GLL £1 sessions on Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29 October. Their eligibility and times must be checked with GLL.
What is the cheapest swimming option after 30 October?
This article covers the 2026 October school holiday promotion only. For later dates, check each pool's normal rates or future council promotions.
