Last checked: 17 September 2026. Christmas in the Lake District in 2026 brings together lantern-lit towns, historic houses, winter theatre, steam trains, underground Santa adventures and some genuinely distinctive festive events. The best trip is not about chasing every market. It is about choosing a base, booking one or two headline experiences and leaving space for the landscapes and towns that make the Lakes special in winter.
This is our dedicated Lake District Christmas 2026 guide. For Carlisle, Ulverston, Cockermouth, Walby Farm Park and other county-wide ideas, see our separate Christmas in Cumbria 2026 guide.
2026 planning note: we only give exact dates where an organiser or official source has published them. Christmas programmes can still change, so confirm the final session time before setting off.Lake District Christmas 2026: dates at a glance

The best Christmas markets and festive towns in the Lake District
Keswick Victorian Fayre - Sunday 6 December 2026
Keswick Victorian Fayre is one of the easiest Lake District festive events to build a full day around. The organiser has confirmed Sunday 6 December 2026, with the Market Square and surrounding town becoming the centre of entertainment and Christmas atmosphere. The combination of independent shops, food, indoor cafés and nearby Derwentwater makes Keswick a particularly good base when you want a market without sacrificing a proper Lake District day.
Explore Keswick before you travel, and check the Victorian Fayre organiser for the latest programme.
Keswick Christmas Lights - Wednesday 18 November 2026
Keswick Town Council has set the 2026 switch-on for Wednesday 18 November. A midweek date makes this particularly useful for visitors already staying in the northern Lakes and for locals who want a festive evening without the weekend crowds. Pair it with an early meal or a lakeside walk before darkness.
Ambleside Christmas Lights - Saturday 21 November 2026
Ambleside's community Christmas event takes place on Saturday 21 November 2026. The organisers have confirmed that the traditional switch-on and parade are going ahead. There will not be a firework display in 2026, a change made by the organising committee because of increased running costs, so older guides mentioning fireworks are out of date.
Ambleside is one of the easiest places to turn the event into a full day, with shops, cafés and access to the northern end of Windermere. See our Ambleside guide and the official 2026 Christmas Lights update.
Hawkshead Christmas Fair - 5 and 6 December 2026
Hawkshead's small streets and historic centre suit Christmas particularly well. The 2026 Christmas Fair is scheduled for the first weekend in December, giving visitors a more village-scale alternative to the busier town events. Combine it with Hill Top or a winter walk in the surrounding area rather than trying to squeeze in several distant events on the same day.
A useful 2026 correction for Windermere
Do not assume every familiar festive event is returning unchanged. The volunteer-led Windermere Christmas market that appeared in older Lake District guides is not part of our confirmed 2026 list. We will only add a Windermere or Bowness market when a current organiser publishes a firm 2026 programme. For now, use Blackwell, Ambleside, Hawkshead, Keswick and the other confirmed options in this guide rather than travelling for an old date.
Lake District Santa experiences worth booking
Santa's Secret Grotto at Honister - 14 November to 23 December
Honister has one of the most unusual Santa experiences anywhere in Cumbria. The route heads underground into the mountain, with elves, a workshop, sleigh-themed elements, Father Christmas and a gift. It is very different from a shopping-centre grotto and fits naturally into a Borrowdale or Keswick stay.
Because this is an underground mountain attraction, read the organiser's access and age information before booking. Check Santa's Secret Grotto availability.
Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Santa Express
The Santa Express runs on selected dates from 21 November to 24 December. Families get elf-led storytelling, a steam journey and a visit to Father Christmas at Dalegarth, with food, drink and a child's gift included in the experience. The railway also lists Little Helper Express dates on 4 and 11 December.
Ravenglass is a destination in its own right, so consider staying in the western Lakes and combining the railway with Muncaster rather than treating it as a long return drive from Windermere. Explore Ravenglass.
See Santa Express 2026 details.
Muncaster Christmas Festival
Muncaster Castle's 2026 Christmas Festival runs on 5 to 6, 12 to 13 and 19 to 22 December. The historic setting gives it a different feel from a town market, with festive activities, the house and grounds, birds of prey and seasonal lighting on selected dates. Santa is available as an additional experience on relevant sessions.
See Muncaster's current Christmas programme.
Christmas lights, houses and winter attractions
Winter at Sizergh - 20 November to 24 December
Sizergh's 2026 winter programme runs daily from 20 November until Christmas Eve, with a light-and-sound trail by local artists, Georgian seasonal storytelling inside the house, crafts and festive food and drink. For visitors based around Kendal or the south-eastern Lakes, it is one of the easiest evening or poor-weather additions to an itinerary.
Check Winter at Sizergh details.
A Hill Top Christmas Tale - 7 November to 13 December
Hill Top becomes a particularly atmospheric stop in late autumn and early winter. From 7 November to 13 December, selected opening days feature festive Beatrix Potter scenes and a seasonal trail. The house is small and capacity is naturally limited, so check opening arrangements before travelling to Near Sawrey.
See the National Trust's Hill Top Christmas information.
Blackwell Winter Craft Fair - two November weekends
Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts house near Bowness, hosts its Winter Craft Fair on 13 to 15 and 20 to 22 November. Different makers appear across the weekends, making it a strong option for locally made or design-led Christmas gifts. It also gives you a substantial indoor element if the weather is grim.
Lights of Lowther
Lowther Castle sits just outside the national park boundary but is a natural Lake District gateway attraction. Its new Lights of Lowther trail runs on selected evenings from 14 November to 30 December through the castle ruins and gardens. It is particularly convenient for Ullswater and Penrith-based stays.
Check Lights of Lowther tickets.
Christmas theatre in the Lake District
A Christmas Carol at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick
Theatre by the Lake stages A Christmas Carol from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The production is designed for family audiences aged 6+ and uses actor-musicians. It is an excellent anchor for a winter weekend because it gives you a guaranteed indoor experience after a short afternoon walk or shopping in Keswick.

Best Lake District places to visit at Christmas
- Keswick: the strongest all-round festive base for Victorian Fayre, lights, theatre, shopping and easy winter lakeside walks.
- Ambleside: ideal for the community lights event, independent shops and access to central Lake District villages.
- Windermere and Bowness: useful for Blackwell, Windermere Jetty, cafés and rainy-day flexibility even without relying on an unconfirmed Christmas market.
- Hawkshead and Near Sawrey: combine a village Christmas atmosphere with Hill Top.
- Borrowdale and Honister: best for a more adventurous festive day centred on Santa's Secret Grotto and dramatic winter scenery.
- Ravenglass: the best western Lakes base for the Santa Express and Muncaster.
- Ullswater and Lowther: a good choice for a quieter stay with the new evening lights trail close by.
Easy winter walks to add to a festive day
Short daylight hours favour lower, flexible walks rather than ambitious fell days. Friar's Crag and the Derwentwater shoreline work well from Keswick; Orrest Head can fit into a Windermere day when conditions are suitable; Tarn Hows is a classic central-Lakes option; and lower woodland walks around Whinlatter or Grizedale can work well when higher ground is uninviting. Always check weather, daylight and path conditions.
How to plan a Lake District Christmas break
Pick one geographic cluster per day
Keswick plus Honister works. Ambleside plus Hawkshead works. Ravenglass plus Muncaster works. Trying to combine all three in a single winter day wastes daylight in the car.
Book the headline event, keep the rest flexible
Secure theatre, Santa, light-trail or railway tickets first. Leave cafés, shops and walks flexible so you can adapt to the weather.
Expect winter conditions
Pack waterproofs, warm layers and footwear suitable for wet paths. Check the forecast and road conditions before longer drives, particularly around higher passes.
