Current access alert: about 65 metres of public Footpath 543030 between Chapel Stile and Baysbrown Farm Campsite is closed because a retaining wall may collapse and send material onto the path.
There is no suitable official pedestrian alternative at present. Do not climb barriers, enter the unsafe section or follow an improvised route over private land.
A short but strategically important path between Chapel Stile and Baysbrown has been closed under an emergency notice. The Lake District National Park's live register was updated on 4 September 2026 after Westmorland and Furness Council identified a risk from the retaining wall between the B5343 and the public footpath.
The closure is roughly 65 metres long, between grid references 331751, 505389 and 331706, 505364. It affects the signed public footpath, not every route through Great Langdale and not the entire B5343. Visitors can still reach Chapel Stile and the wider valley by road, subject to ordinary conditions and any separate traffic restrictions.

Is the B5343 through Great Langdale closed?
No general closure of the B5343 is stated in this notice. The risk comes from a retaining wall between that road and the path, but the emergency order closes the affected stretch of footpath. Continue to follow live road signs and drive carefully because Great Langdale is narrow, busy and used by walkers, cyclists, buses and farm traffic.
Can you walk from Chapel Stile to Baysbrown?
Do not plan to use the normal Footpath 543030 connection through the closed section. The National Park's current register explicitly says that there is no alternative route at present, while discussions continue with landowners.
That matters because older or separately maintained information may suggest a temporary diversion. Baysbrown's own website contains an older reference to a diversion being installed in August, but the newer National Park update dated 4 September says no alternative currently exists. For safety, follow the latest authority notice and the barriers on site.
A road verge, field edge, campsite track or line shown on a mapping app is not automatically a public right of way. Do not create an unofficial bypass or encourage others across private land.
What does this mean for Baysbrown Farm Campsite?
The campsite says it remains open. Its normal access lane is currently described as closed and impassable to vehicles and pedestrians, with vehicle access using a separate temporary route. The campsite describes that approach as about one mile of tarmac with only a few passing places.
- Read the campsite's current arrival instructions before setting off.
- Do not assume the normal lane or the closed public footpath can be used on foot.
- Drive slowly and be ready to use passing places on the temporary access.
- Contact Baysbrown directly if your vehicle is large or your arrival depends on step-free access.
- Use the campsite's own directions rather than relying only on a postcode pin.

Sticklefest 2026: what campers need to change
Sticklefest runs at Stickle Barn from 25 to 27 September, and its accommodation guidance includes Baysbrown as a separate nearby campsite. The footpath closure means festival-goers must not assume they can walk the usual Chapel Stile-Baysbrown connection.
If staying at Baysbrown, obtain route and arrival advice from the campsite and ask the festival or accommodation host how to make the journey safely. Never plan a late walk around a closure based on an unverified map line. Great Langdale is dark, rural and can have poor mobile reception.
The 516 bus from Ambleside continues along the Great Langdale corridor to Dungeon Ghyll on its published timetable. It is useful for the valley, but it does not remove the need to plan the final connection to a campsite or event venue. Check the last return before attending evening music.
Parking and reaching the rest of Great Langdale
For Stickle Barn and the upper valley, use established parking such as Stickle Ghyll or New Dungeon Ghyll only when spaces are available. These are not substitutes for campsite parking and can fill early.
Do not park on the B5343, in passing places, gateways or on verges. The footpath closure does not justify leaving a vehicle at an unsafe or unauthorised point.
How long will the closure last?
The emergency notice permits closure for up to 21 days from 4 September, but the official register already warns that an extension is very likely. A second emergency notice can be followed by a longer temporary order if investigation and repairs require it.
In practical terms, do not treat 25 September as a guaranteed reopening date. Check the current register shortly before walking, camping or travelling to Sticklefest.
