About Temple of Play

Temple of Play is a new family play cafe and community hub taking shape at 2 Queen Street in the centre of Ulverston. It is being created specifically for families with children aged 0 to 5, with indoor play at the heart of the venue alongside a cafe and a programme of activities and support for parents and carers. The project is run by Temple of Play CIC, a Community Interest Company developing a permanent space where young children can play and explore while the adults caring for them have somewhere comfortable to sit, meet other families and find useful local support.Plans for the ground floor of the former bank at 2 Queen Street were formally approved by Westmorland and Furness Council in October 2025.

The approved use is a family play cafe with indoor play space for children aged 0 to 5 and a cafe serving hot and cold drinks, light meals and snacks. The venue is not simply being presented as another soft-play centre. Temple of Play says the space will include play sessions, creative workshops and activities, practical resources and local signposting, with the overall project shaped by conversations and surveys with local parents and carers. Its stated aim is to make the space inclusive for different families, including children with additional needs and SEND families. The team also plans workshops and activities around early development, wellbeing and parenting confidence, alongside informal opportunities for families to connect. The cafe is intended to be a genuine part of the experience rather than an afterthought, giving adults somewhere to have a coffee while children play. The final menu, prices and food offer have not yet been published beyond the approved provision for drinks, light meals and snacks.Temple of Play's own updates say the project has moved through crowdfunding and renovation and is now on the home stretch towards opening. Funding already secured is being used alongside ongoing fundraising for the fit-out, equipment, programmes and staffing. The Queen Street location puts the venue right in Ulverston town centre, making it practical to combine with the town's shops, cafes and other attractions. Visitors arriving by car should use public town-centre parking rather than assume dedicated parking at the venue. No exact opening date, admission price, session timetable or booking arrangements have been announced yet. Cumbria Guru therefore lists Temple of Play as coming soon and will update this page when the team confirms its first public sessions.

The Cumbria Guru verdict

Worth It

A very promising new option for families with babies, toddlers and pre-school children in Ulverston. The mix of play, coffee, workshops and practical family support should make it useful for local families as well as visitors looking for an indoor activity on a wet day.
