About Talkin Tarn Country Park

A lakeside escape near Brampton

Talkin Tarn Country Park offers a welcoming mix of lake views, woodland, open grass and relatively gentle walking a short distance from Brampton. It is a useful choice for families with mixed ages, casual walkers and visitors who want a scenic outdoor stop without committing to a mountain route.

What to do

A circuit around the tarn makes the water the centre of a visit. The council promotes water sports, orienteering, exhibitions and easy paths alongside woodland and open space. Many visitors come simply to stroll, watch birds or enjoy a picnic. Individual activities and clubs can have their own booking and weather requirements: do not assume boats or organised sessions are available on arrival.

Opening and facilities

Cumberland Council lists the country park itself as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Toilets have separate advertised hours, generally 9am–5pm. A downstairs tearoom and gift shop has its own published daily window, while the upstairs tearoom is marked closed on the current council page. Check with the venue before relying on refreshments, and remember that the car park operates under separate terms from the wider park.

Parking and accessibility

The park is on Tarn Road, Brampton, CA8 1HN, with designated parking and accessible spaces. Parking charges may apply even though the park is free to enter. The relatively easy lakeside paths are a major part of its appeal, but weather, surface conditions and individual mobility requirements can affect how much of the circuit suits each visitor.

A useful North Cumbria day out

Talkin Tarn works well alongside Brampton, Lanercost Priory and other attractions around the eastern edge of Carlisle. Bring appropriate layers for exposed water-side weather and give wildlife space. Check the operator website for the latest activity sessions, facility hours and any maintenance notices.
