About Birdoswald Roman Fort

Birdoswald Roman Fort stands on the Roman frontier near Gilsland, above the River Irthing, and offers a memorable way to explore Hadrian’s Wall in the Cumbrian countryside. The site combines the foundations and defences of a Roman fort with a visitor exhibition and nearby stretches of the Wall.

What you can see

The remains include parts of the fort’s gates and defences. Interactive interpretation explains Roman military life and how the frontier was constructed and defended. English Heritage also highlights opportunities for children to investigate the fort through games and clues.

Beyond the fort are far-reaching views and one of the most continuous surviving visible sections of Hadrian’s Wall. The surrounding paths make the site attractive to walkers as well as families interested in Roman Britain.

Practical planning

Birdoswald lies close to the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail. A café and visitor facilities are available at the site, subject to the day’s opening arrangements. Allow extra time if you want to extend your visit along the Wall.

This is a rural location, so travel plans and weather conditions matter. English Heritage offers advance tickets and discounts, while members can use their membership benefits.

Seasonal opening caveat

Birdoswald does not operate the same opening pattern throughout the year. English Heritage’s detailed 2026/27 calendar states that it changes from daily opening to weekends only from 2 November to 23 December 2026, with festive exceptions.

Do not rely on generic map search opening hours for winter dates. Check the site-specific timetable for the date you intend to visit.

Check before you travel

Admission arrangements, weather, access restrictions and seasonal hours can change. Check the official website before setting out, especially if making a special journey.
