About Lanercost Priory

Lanercost Priory is one of northern Cumbria’s most atmospheric medieval sites, standing in a peaceful valley near Brampton and Hadrian’s Wall. The remains of its Augustinian priory combine substantial roofless masonry with the part of the church still used for worship today.

A medieval site with Roman connections

The priory dates from the twelfth century. Its monumental remains include the dramatic east end, fine arches and later features created when parts of the monastic buildings were adapted as a residence.

Its setting close to the Roman frontier adds another layer of history: Roman stones were reused here, connecting two very different periods of Cumbrian heritage.

What to explore

Visitors can study the ruins, memorials and surviving architectural detail, including the Dacre family’s associations with the site. The active church is part of the wider complex but operates separately from the managed ruins and may be affected by services.

A tearoom nearby makes Lanercost a natural stop on a heritage route through the Irthing Valley, perhaps paired with Birdoswald or other Hadrian’s Wall attractions.

Entry and getting there

Lanercost is close to Brampton, with the postcode CA8 2HQ. English Heritage manages the historic ruins and offers advance admission booking; the working church should be treated respectfully.

Opening times change through the year and the operator’s website should be consulted before a winter visit. The site’s uneven historic surfaces may also affect access to particular areas.
