The Derwentwater Hotel stands in Portinscale, close to Keswick and Derwentwater. The hotel is undergoing a substantial refurbishment, with January 2027 previously given as a reopening target. Check directly with the operator for current availability and confirmed reopening arrangements. EXPANSION APPROVED IN OCTOBER 2026 A separate planning scheme, application 7/2026/2022, has been approved for alterations and extension works. The proposals include eight additional bedrooms, a ballroom, restaurant and a new front-facing café intended for hotel residents and members of the public. The scheme involves removal or replacement of the existing conservatory, rather than merely redecorating it. Improved coach-parking arrangements were also discussed during consultation. These facilities are planned, not operating. Planning permission is not a construction-completion or opening announcement.

Bedroom totals have been reported on different bases, so visitors should check final capacity with the hotel rather than assume eight rooms can simply be added to an earlier published total. Our local note
A major one to watch for 2027. The £4m refurbishment is transforming the main hotel rather than simply refreshing rooms, and the combination of 64 bedrooms, lake access and 15 acres near Keswick gives it serious potential. Until January, book one of the open self-catering apartments or cottage rather than expecting the hotel itself to be operating.
