Know before you go

Your guide to Lazonby

Lazonby is a friendly Eden Valley village beside the River Eden, with a station on the Settle to Carlisle line, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and easy access to some of the valley's best historic walks.

Lazonby sits in the Lower Eden Valley, north of Penrith, with the River Eden curling past the edge of the village. It is not a busy resort, and that is part of the appeal. This is a useful base for slow days outdoors, railway trips and exploring the quieter side of Cumbria.

The village has one of the Eden Valley's most distinctive summer attractions in Lazonby Outdoor Swimming Pool. Down by the river, the old sandstone Eden Bridge gives easy access to the water, riverside views and the Eden Benchmarks sculpture trail.

A few miles away are two of the area's strongest historic sights. Long Meg and Her Daughters is one of England's largest prehistoric stone circles, while Lacy's Caves are atmospheric chambers cut into the red sandstone above the River Eden.

Why stay in Lazonby?

Lazonby works particularly well if you want Cumbria without the crowds of the central Lakes. Penrith is close enough for bigger shops and services, but the village itself puts you straight into the Eden Valley countryside. The Settle to Carlisle line also makes it one of the more practical rural villages to visit without relying entirely on a car.
