Workington Road Closures and Roadworks 2026: Full Dates, Diversions and Travel Guide

A live planning hub for the A66, A596, Hall Park View, Hall Brow, Washington Street, Central Way, Workington Viaduct and later works

Workington is facing a rolling programme of road closures, traffic lights and utility works through autumn 2026 and into spring 2027. The disruption is not one single project: it includes Cumberland Council highway schemes, National Highways A66 resurfacing, active-travel work and utility upgrades by United Utilities, Electricity North West and Northern Gas Networks.

This page is Cumbria Guru's evergreen Workington roadworks hub. Instead of treating every closure as a separate story, the main dates sit together here with links to more detailed guides where a scheme needs its own page.

Important: dates can change because of weather, progress and operational requirements. Follow live signs and check One.Network or the controlling authority before a time-critical journey.

What is closed this weekend?

A596 Hall Park View, between Cumbria Police HQ and Calva Brow Roundabout, is scheduled to close from 6am on Saturday 12 September until 9pm on Sunday 13 September for resurfacing and road markings.

At the same time, the separate A66 Stainburn Roundabout to Ramsay Brow National Highways closure runs from Friday evening until Monday morning. Read the dedicated A66 Workington weekend closure guide for that programme.

14-16 September: Washington Street overnight closure

A596 Washington Street is scheduled for a two-night road closure for traffic-signal loop installation. Live roadworks data shows the restriction beginning around 7pm on Monday 14 September and ending at 6am on Wednesday 16 September, with Curwen Street traffic management also changing.

Follow signs on each night rather than relying on one saved sat-nav route.

18-21 September: A66 weekend closure

The next National Highways weekend closure is scheduled from 6.30pm Friday 18 September to 6am Monday 21 September between Stainburn Roundabout and Ramsay Brow. The council's consolidated notice gives the signed diversion corridor as the A595, A596 and A597.

19-20 September: Hall Brow closure

A596 Hall Brow, from the M&S junction to Cumbria Police HQ, is due to close from 6am Saturday 19 September to 9pm Sunday 20 September for resurfacing and road markings.

25-28 September: another A66 weekend

National Highways currently has another full closure planned from 6.30pm Friday 25 September to 6am Monday 28 September between Stainburn Roundabout and Ramsay Brow.

Stainburn Road active-travel work: until 4 December

The A66 Active Travel Scheme on Stainburn Road is scheduled from 1 September to 4 December 2026. Temporary traffic signals operate Monday to Friday while walking, wheeling and cycling facilities are installed.

October: High Street and Central Way

A596 High Street: 15-16 October

United Utilities plans defect repair work with temporary traffic management.

Central Way: five days from 19 October

The Central Way Active Travel Scheme requires a full road closure for resurfacing. Cumberland Council currently describes the closure as starting Monday 19 October for five days. Cumbria Guru will add the exact diversion and car-park access arrangements when they are published.

A596 High Street: 20-26 October

Electricity North West then has new connection works scheduled under temporary traffic management.

29 October-3 December: Workington Viaduct gas-main work

Northern Gas Networks is due to replace gas mains at Workington Viaduct from Thursday 29 October to Thursday 3 December.

The key visitor and commuter detail is already confirmed: there will be no left turn from the railway station onto Workington Viaduct during the works. Follow the signed diversion.

13-16 November: more High Street work

Electricity North West has a further A596 High Street defect-repair window from Friday 13 to Monday 16 November, again with temporary traffic management.

High Harrington footbridge: January to March 2027

Essential repairs to the Main Road Footbridge in High Harrington are planned from 4 January to 26 March 2027, with temporary traffic lights.

Is Workington town centre still open?

Yes. These are individual closures and traffic-management schemes, not a closure of Workington itself. Shops, cafés, attractions, the railway station and public car parks remain available according to their own opening and access arrangements.

Parking during Workington roadworks

There is no single car park that is guaranteed to be the best choice throughout every phase. For central visits, check established parking such as Workington Multi Storey and Brow Top, but check the live approach route first.

Visiting without a car

Workington railway station remains an important alternative during road disruption, although the autumn viaduct works change road access immediately outside the station. Bus services may also be diverted when specific roads close.

Why are there so many works at once?

The programme combines the final phases of the Workington Gateway improvements, National Highways resurfacing, active-travel schemes and utility-network upgrades. Cumberland Council says programmes are being coordinated where possible.
