A wood-fired wild sauna and optional cold-water plunge arrive at Whinlatter Forest on Sunday 13 September 2026. Five small-group sessions are advertised at 9am, 10am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm, priced at £15.50 per person.
This is deliberately different from a spa day. The sauna sits among the trees, changing is outdoors and the water entry can be rocky. Good preparation matters more than bringing luxury kit.

What to bring
- Swimwear, ideally worn under your clothes
- A towel, which you must sit on inside the sauna
- Water shoes because the plunge entry can be rocky
- A dry robe or dressing gown
- Warm layers for afterwards
- A flask or warm drink
- Good walking footwear for uneven forest ground
- An optional changing mat
Where to park
Use Whinlatter Forest Main Car Park beside the visitor centre. It uses ANPR and payment on exit. The published maximum day charge checked on 6 September was £14, and charges apply to Blue Badge holders unless another valid parking entitlement applies.
Do not treat your parking time as your arrival time. Forestry England says to allow 10 to 15 minutes after parking so you can use the toilets behind the visitor centre and walk to the sauna.
Changing and toilets
The event information specifically suggests wearing swimwear underneath normal clothing and bringing a robe. That is a strong clue to expect simple outdoor changing rather than a spa changing room. Use the visitor-centre toilets before walking to the sauna.
Do you have to take the plunge?
The cold-water element is described as an opportunity, not something to force. Listen to your body and follow the session leader's guidance. The entry is rocky, so water shoes are important.
Health and safety
Sauna heat, cold water and uneven natural ground are not suitable for everyone. Read The Conscious Self terms before booking. If you are pregnant, have a heart or circulation condition, take relevant medication, have reduced mobility or are unsure about cold-water immersion, ask the provider and seek appropriate medical advice before taking part.
Do not use the session as a reason to make unsupported health claims. The practical benefit is a guided outdoor experience; individual responses to heat and cold vary.
Can spectators or dogs attend?
The booking page does not advertise spectator places or dog attendance at the sauna area. Contact the organiser before bringing a non-participant or animal. Dogs are generally welcome in the wider forest under Forestry England guidance, but that does not automatically apply to a small wellness session.
Combine it with a forest visit
Explore our Whinlatter Forest visitor guide for walks, mountain-bike trails, family activities, opening hours and the current forestry alert. Avoid scheduling a strenuous ride immediately before or after the session unless you know the plan suits your ability and hydration.
Final checklist
- Confirm the session is still available.
- Read the provider terms and disclose relevant concerns.
- Wear swimwear under warm clothes.
- Pack towel, water shoes, robe and layers.
- Arrive at the car park at least 15 minutes before you need to be at the sauna.
- Use the visitor-centre toilets first.
- Follow the leader and do not push the cold-water element.
