Kendal''s Nether Bridge will close to all vehicles from Monday 12 October 2026 for a maximum of five days while a damaged section of its historic southern parapet is rebuilt.
The closure is planned to operate 24 hours a day. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross using the designated northern footway, so this is a vehicle closure rather than a complete closure of the bridge.

Why is Nether Bridge closing?
A traffic incident in June demolished around 10 metres of the southern parapet wall. The council says reconstruction needs site vehicles, an underbridge unit, stone, masonry and mixing equipment to occupy most of the carriageway, leaving no safe running lane for traffic.
What is the official diversion?
The signed diversion will use Romney Bridge and Milnthorpe Road. Follow the live diversion signs rather than relying on a sat-nav route around the closure.
Additional signs are planned to stop HGVs using Parkside Road because the railway bridge there has a 13ft 3in height restriction. Drivers of larger vehicles should follow the signed HGV routing and not improvise through residential streets.
Can you walk or cycle across Nether Bridge?
Yes. Westmorland and Furness Council says pedestrian and cycle access will be maintained throughout the works using the northern footway.
The southern footway is different. It will need to remain closed for several weeks after the road reopens because protective covers are required while the traditional lime mortar cures.
Why does the repair need special care?
Nether Bridge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It also spans the River Kent, which is designated as both a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
The council''s chosen method keeps the works on the bridge deck. That avoids placing scaffolding in the river channel, which the authority says could otherwise delay the repair until the next permitted environmental river-working window in summer 2027.
How will the historic stonework be repaired?
Recovered original stone will be reused where possible and supplemented with locally sourced stone where required. Traditional lime mortar is being used to preserve the bridge''s historic character.
The October timing is intended to give the lime mortar time to cure before colder winter weather arrives.
What does this mean for a Kendal visit?
Kendal itself remains open. The closure affects one river crossing and the approaches that normally use it. Visitors should allow extra driving time, especially when approaching or leaving the southern side of town.
If you are staying in or visiting Kendal, check your accommodation or attraction''s recommended route shortly before travel. Do not assume a journey time from a normal map still applies during the five-day closure.
Will the bridge definitely reopen after five days?
The council describes five days as the maximum planned vehicle closure, not a guaranteed exact reopening time. Construction progress, site conditions and safety can affect live roadworks.
The carriageway may reopen while the southern footway remains closed for the separate mortar-curing period.
