Bus stops around Carlisle Market Hall change from Tuesday 1 September 2026 while Cumberland Council carries out the first phase of improvements to the city-centre bus hub.
The bus-hub area beside Market Hall and surrounding footways will close to buses and pedestrians. The stands opposite Market Hall remain open, but passengers who normally use Stands K, L or M need different stops.

When do the changes start?
Tuesday 1 September 2026. Phase one is planned for September to November and the council expects the hub to reopen before Christmas.
Why is the hub closing?
The improvement scheme will add sandstone paving, four new lighting columns, seating and street furniture. A second phase is planned for early January 2027 to refurbish the shelters with new roofs, LED lighting, redecoration and repairs.
Is Market Hall closed?
No. Market Hall remains open. The north entrance will be unavailable during phase one, but Scotch Street and Fisher Street remain available.
For the Fisher Street entrance, the council says visitors should enter through TK Maxx, use the escalator and then take the stairs down into Market Hall.
Will there be seating at temporary stops?
Existing bus-hub benches are being moved to Drovers Lane. Lowther Street already has seating.
How to avoid missing your bus
- Check the route number before walking to the temporary stop.
- Allow extra time the first time you use the arrangement.
- Follow temporary signage rather than waiting at closed Stands K, L or M.
- Recheck Cumberland Council or your operator if works change.
- Allow extra transfer time if connecting from Carlisle railway station.
Visiting Carlisle during the works
Carlisle Cathedral, Tullie, Carlisle Castle, shops and city-centre businesses remain accessible. Expect barriers and changed pedestrian routes around Market Hall.
When will normal stops return?
The council currently expects the hub to reopen before Christmas 2026, although construction programmes can change. Phase two follows in January 2027.
