Tullie is Carlisle’s museum, art gallery, and community hub, a home for the eternally curious. Since 1893, Tullie has been at the heart of the city’s cultural life, once described as Carlisle’s first learning centre. Today, it continues to inspire curiosity and creativity through world-class collections, forward-thinking exhibitions, and engaging events for all ages. Visitors can explore an impressive collection of over one million objects, from Pre-Raphaelite art and natural science treasures to stories spanning 10,000 years of human history. Tullie has hosted major exhibitions featuring Turner, Rembrandt, and even Paddington Bear, showing that culture thrives in Cumbria as much as in any big city. Following a major redevelopment in 2024, Tullie now welcomes guests into brand-new spaces including a striking entrance, modern welcome area, a Carlisle Gallery, the City Hall Studio, and a fresh museum shop. Alongside its permanent collections, Tullie runs a busy programme of workshops, school sessions, and community projects, making heritage accessible to everyone – including groups who might otherwise face barriers to culture.
