Stone Arthur

Stone Arthur is a subsidiary summit on the south-western shoulder of Great Rigg and one of Alfred Wainwright’s 214 Lakeland fells. From Grasmere it provides a relatively compact hill day, climbing quickly above the village and opening increasingly broad views over the lake, surrounding ridges and central Lake District.

The walk is steeper and less forgiving than its modest height might suggest. Routes typically leave the A591 side of Grasmere and climb via Greenhead Gill before reaching rougher open fell. Walkers can return from Stone Arthur or continue towards Great Rigg and the Fairfield ridge if experience, weather and daylight allow.

There are no facilities on the fell and sections can be wet, eroded or indistinct. Treat it as a mountain walk: check the forecast, carry navigation and spare layers, and be prepared to turn back. It is best suited to walkers comfortable on steep Lakeland paths.
