Sourmilk Ghyll
Tumbling waterfall and mountain stream on the popular path from Grasmere to Easedale Tarn, especially impressive after rain.
About Sourmilk Ghyll
Sourmilk Ghyll, also written as Sour Milk Ghyll, tumbles down the fellside above Easedale and is one of the natural highlights on the walk from Grasmere to Easedale Tarn. Its pale, frothy cascades are the origin of the memorable name and become particularly dramatic after rainfall.
The waterfall is not a roadside attraction. Reaching the best views involves following the walking route out of Grasmere and climbing beside the ghyll towards Easedale Tarn. That makes it easy to combine both places in one outing rather than treating the waterfall as a separate quick photo stop.
Rock beside fast water can be extremely slippery and water levels rise after heavy rain. Stay on the established path, keep children and dogs safely away from steep drops and do not enter the cascades. Normal hillwalking clothing and footwear are sensible even if the village is dry.
Our local note
A beautiful part of the Easedale Tarn walk and one of Grasmere’s most photogenic natural features after wet weather.
