About Silver How

Silver How rises immediately west of Grasmere and is one of the most rewarding shorter fell walks from the village. It forms part of the Blea Rigg ridge between Grasmere and Langdale, giving it excellent views in several directions without the scale of a full high-fell day.

The National Trust describes a route of about 2.8 miles (4.5 km) with well-maintained paths and a relatively straightforward ascent. The open grassy summit has room to stop and take in the vale of Grasmere, with views extending towards Langdale when conditions are clear.

It is still open fell rather than a surfaced visitor trail. Cloud can remove the views and make path-finding harder, while wet grass and rock can be slippery. Carry suitable footwear, layers and a map or navigation method, and allow additional time if extending the walk along the ridge.

The Cumbria Guru verdict

Our local note

A brilliant choice for big views on a shorter walk, and an ideal next step for visitors beginning to explore the fells around Grasmere.
