Mitchells is woven into Cockermouth's commercial history. The company traces its origins to the nineteenth century and continues to run regular auctions in the town, covering antiques, fine art, household items and specialist categories. For visitors, it is one of the few places where Cockermouth's market-town heritage can still be experienced as a working business rather than a museum display.

The saleroom occupies a distinctive former cattle-market complex with an octagonal auction ring and tiered seating. Viewing sessions give prospective buyers and curious visitors the chance to inspect forthcoming lots, while bidding can take place in person or through remote services depending on the sale.
