About M&S Foodhall Workington
M&S is planning a major new Foodhall off Derwent Drive in Workington. The multi-million-pound proposal was announced on 29 September 2026 and would create an 18,000 sq ft standalone food store.
This store is not open and is not yet guaranteed to be built. Development partner Kingmoor Park Properties is submitting the planning application to Cumberland Council. If permission is granted and the project proceeds, M&S is targeting autumn 2028 for opening.

What is planned?
M&S says the proposed Foodhall would stock more than 6,600 products, with an in-store bakery, flowers, wine and Click & Collect. Plans also include free on-site parking and EV charging points.
What happens to the existing M&S?
The existing M&S at 62 Pow Street remains open. Staff from its current food operation would transfer to the new Foodhall when it opens, while around 20 additional jobs are expected.
Cumbrian suppliers
M&S says more than 90 Cumbrian farm partners would supply produce to the store.
When will it open?
The current target is autumn 2028, subject to planning approval. There is no confirmed opening day or construction timetable yet. Do not travel to Derwent Drive expecting an M&S store; the current Workington branch continues to trade from Pow Street.
Our local note
A significant proposed retail investment for Workington, but it is still subject to planning. Autumn 2028 is a target rather than a guaranteed opening date.
