Kendal Castle

Free-to-visit castle ruins on a prominent hill east of Kendal, reached by a steep walk and offering broad views over the town and surrounding fells.

Kendal Castle stands on a drumlin to the east of the town centre. The building has been a ruin since Tudor times, but substantial stone remains survive and the hilltop position provides wide views across Kendal and towards the surrounding landscape. The ruins are freely accessible, with no conventional visitor centre or staffed ticket desk. Reaching the site involves an uphill walk, and paths can become wet, muddy or slippery. Wear suitable footwear, supervise children around uneven ground and masonry, and check weather and path conditions before setting out.
