Jennings Brewery
Historic Cockermouth brewery back in independent local ownership, with beer once again brewed beneath the castle, a seven-day taproom and bookable brewery tours.
About Jennings Brewery
Jennings Brewery is one of Cockermouth's defining landmarks. Founded in 1828 and established at Castle Brewery beside the River Cocker in the nineteenth century, Jennings became closely associated with pubs and fell-walking across the Lake District. Brewing at Cockermouth stopped in 2022, but the site and brand returned to local independent family ownership and the brewery reopened in 2025. Beer is once again made at Castle Brewery using water from the brewery's own well.
For visitors, this is now much more than a historic building to look at from the street. The taproom is open seven days a week and pours the core Jennings range alongside seasonal and special beers, while visiting kitchens and events add to the atmosphere. Guided brewery tours can also be booked, giving a closer look at the working site and the story of one of Cumbria's best-known brewing names.
The brewery sits directly below Cockermouth Castle and only a short walk from Market Place, making it easy to combine with the historic centre. Tour availability and taproom events vary, so check the official website before making a special journey.
Our local note
A genuine Cockermouth essential: part working brewery, part heritage attraction and part lively taproom, with a story that is inseparable from the town.
