About Grasmere Lake
Grasmere Lake sits just south of the village that shares its name and is one of the most accessible pieces of classic Lake District scenery. William Wordsworth knew the landscape intimately, and today the combination of water, wooded shoreline and enclosing fells still makes it one of the area’s most photographed views.
A popular low-level circuit uses lakeshore paths and quiet lanes, with the National Trust describing a family-friendly route of about 4 miles (6.5 km). Motor boats are prohibited, helping the lake retain a quieter character. Seasonal rowing is available locally and the shoreline is also popular with walkers, picnickers and people enjoying the water.
Access varies around the shore and parts of a full circuit use roads, so it is worth planning the route before setting off. Anyone entering the water should treat it as open-water swimming, check conditions, stay visible and follow Lake District Swim Safe guidance rather than assuming a calm-looking lake is risk free.
