Plans have been submitted to bring Barrow-in-Furness's historic Majestic Hotel back into use as a Garner Hotel under the IHG Hotels & Resorts brand.The Duke Street hotel has been vacant for around two years and is currently closed. Ashall Projects Limited has submitted proposals covering internal refurbishment, replacement of 12 windows, new signage and installation of a new lift. Franklin Ellis Architects states that the property is intended to become a Garner Hotel under the IHG brand.Reception, lounge and barThe proposed ground-floor layout would create a more open arrival area, with clearer views through reception and check-in towards the lounge.

A new bar is intended to become a prominent focal point within the lobby, with glazed doors improving visibility between spaces.Longer-stay roomsThe scheme is intended to complement the neighbouring Holiday Inn Express and includes a number of longer-stay rooms with kitchenettes. The previous Majestic operation was historically reported with around 41 bedrooms, but the current redevelopment reporting does not confirm the final post-refurbishment room count, so Cumbria Guru does not present 41 as the future Garner total.Historic buildingHistoric England lists Hotel Majestic as Grade II. The building dates from 1904 and was designed by J Y McIntosh for Henry Tyson. Its curved red-brick and red-sandstone frontage is a prominent feature of Duke Street near Schneider Square.Current statusThis remains a proposed hotel redevelopment. There is no confirmed opening date and no live IHG booking page for the Barrow property yet. Exact room facilities, breakfast arrangements, parking, accessibility, pet policy, rates and opening hours will be added once Ashall Projects, IHG or the council confirms the next stage.
Worth It
A potentially important hotel return for central Barrow, combining an international IHG brand with the restoration of a Grade II-listed landmark. Track it now, but do not treat it as open or bookable yet.
