Easedale Tarn
High mountain tarn above Grasmere reached on a classic walk beside Sourmilk Ghyll, with a peaceful bowl of fells and routes continuing into the Central Fells.
About Easedale Tarn
Easedale Tarn is one of the classic walking destinations from Grasmere. The usual approach leaves the village through Easedale, crosses open farmland and then climbs beside the white cascades of Sourmilk Ghyll before arriving at the tarn, which sits in a dramatic natural bowl beneath the surrounding fells.
The National Trust describes the out-and-back outing from Grasmere as around 5 miles (8 km) with a moderately easy ascent. The tarn makes a rewarding destination in its own right, while experienced walkers can continue towards higher ground including Sergeant Man and the Blea Rigg ridge. Paths become rougher higher up and weather can change quickly, so footwear, layers and navigation suitable for the conditions are important.
There is no road access to the tarn itself. Start from Grasmere and allow enough time for the return journey, particularly in winter or poor visibility. Keep dogs under close control around livestock and follow any temporary path or land-management notices.
Our local note
A superb half-day objective from Grasmere: enough mountain atmosphere to feel adventurous without requiring a major summit day.
