About Cumbria's Museum of Military Life

Cumbria's Museum of Military Life occupies the Alma Block within the walls of Carlisle Castle. Its collections tell the story of the Border Regiment, the King's Own Royal Border Regiment and their successors across more than 300 years of military and social history.

Displays include uniforms, insignia, medals, weapons, equipment, silver and personal stories, with interactive elements, children's activities and changing exhibitions. Visitors who only want the museum can pay at its own front desk without purchasing Carlisle Castle admission, while a joint ticket is available separately. The main collection is on the ground floor with step-free access; temporary displays upstairs use a stairlift and visitors with mobility requirements are asked to contact the museum in advance. A seasonal café and museum shop are also available.

Our local note

An essential companion to Carlisle Castle that gives the city's military story real human depth. Museum-only admission makes it easy to visit independently.
